County Waste NY RecyclingDuring the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it is easy to get distracted from our ordinary routines, especially with kids being home from school, entertaining family and friends, and holiday shopping. During this busy time of year there is one routine that is important to remember, holiday recycling.

Household waste increases nearly 25 percent from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day each year, but with a little extra effort we can all do our part to ensure an enjoyable and green holiday season. It is easy to overlook recycling during the holidays, but at County Waste we are here to help you with all of your holiday recycling needs.

At County Waste we understand the importance of recycling in today’s society. We encourage green options by offering Single Stream Recycling (SSR) which makes it easy to recycle.

Make your Thanksgiving a little bit greener. Here are a few tips to stay green this holiday:

  1. Buy Local

Thanksgiving is the perfect time to buy locally and support farmers in your community. But, before you go to the local farmer's market see what you may have in your pantry to use for your Thanksgiving dinner. Stock up on vegetables and try some new recipes this Thanksgiving too. If you shop locally you could save money. When you make a step to buy locally you save on your transportation costs and help prevent air pollution. When you buy locally you also help reduce travel costs to transport items. Some companies have trucks travel up to 2000 miles just to deliver an item. When you buy locally you are helping conserve the energy that is used for transportation.

  2. Decorate Naturally

Think about ways you can be green and decorate with items you may already have. If you have kids, have them help you decorate a natural grapevine wreath. They are very affordable and they can be decorated with dried flowers and a jute ribbon. The seasonal wreaths can become a family tradition of fun.

  3. Reduce Use

If each family in the U.S. bought just one less package of disposal plates a year, we could save about a million trees. Instead of using paper or plastic plates for Thanksgiving, use reusable items at the dinner table. The same goes for preparing your meal, disposable aluminum roasting pans may seem convenient, but go green by opting for pans that you can reuse and save resources.

  4. Make it Easy

Have a bin for your food and trash and one for recyclable items for your guests. This will help keep recyclable materials from ending up in the trash. Let your guests know which one is for trash and which one is for recyclable items.

By sticking to your recycling routine and utilizing some of the tips mentioned above, you will be on your way to a green Thanksgiving and holiday season this year. The holidays are also a good way to share your recycling routines with your guests, why you recycle, and how they can help when they are at your place. Pass the values that you have about recycling to your family and friends, by doing this you could start a simple Thanksgiving tradition.

At County Waste we accept an assorted list of recyclables. We make it easy to become environmentally friendly. Developing cost-effective recycling programs is an important part of waste management and with that in mind we encourage green operations by offering commercial and residential garbage and recycling services. We strive to reduce our impact on the environment.
